The AI Agency: Workforce Development for Economic Uplift in Mississippi

The Mississippi AI Collaborative, via its AI Agency, aims to enhance the state's workforce and economy through the application of artificial intelligence and cloud technologies. This exploration examines the AI Agency's strategic plans, focusing on the significant role of the prospective Chief Technology Officer (CTO), the economic potential based on global research, and the specific services designed to support local businesses and non-profits. With a strategy focused on integrating generative AI technologies into local businesses and nonprofit sectors, the agency is setting a new standard for community-focused and student-led innovation.

The impact of AI on local economies, especially with initiatives like Mississippi's AI Agency, is significant. The impact of AI on business has already been examined for several years. A 2018 McKinsey discussion paper argued that AI could add about $13 trillion to the global economy by 2030, potentially doubling annual economic growth in developed economies by 2035. (1) Additionally, the authors argue that AI is set to transform trade by increasing productivity and competitiveness, leading to new opportunities in international markets. However, this transition comes with challenges, including the potential for rising income inequality and job losses, highlighting the need for careful policy development and implementation. These insights demonstrate the transformative economic potential of AI initiatives like those in Mississippi, poised to drive growth, innovation, and competitiveness while navigating the associated challenges.

AI also has transformative potential for small businesses, as it can automate processes, enhance customer service, and aid with data-driven decisions. A 2022 report from Deloitte provides a comprehensive analysis of AI's impact on businesses. (2) It reveals AI's essential role in driving diverse outcomes, from cost reduction to new market entry, with a notable increase in full-scale AI deployments leading to significant revenue generation beyond cost-saving measures. However, challenges persist, particularly in scaling AI, with issues like managing AI-related risks, and maintenance of technologies post-implementation being prominent. As argued by Kate Behncken, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Philanthropies, AI can also significantly reduce costs for non-profits, boost productivity, and empower employees to focus on high-impact initiatives. The success of AI integration in business will depend on a variety of factors, including workforce upskilling, education in best practices regarding ethics and sustainability, reimagining operations, and matching technology to the experience of business leaders for achieving high outcomes. Strategic investment in not only technology but people and upskilling is crucial for early value realization. This isn't just a narrative applicable to large companies; it's a tangible prospect for all of Mississippi, where the introduction of AI could increase revenue for early adopters, revolutionize nonprofit operations, and elevate small businesses to new heights of efficiency and success.

The Vision and Strategy of the AI Agency

The AI Agency, an ambitious project of the Mississippi AI Collaborative, aims to be a driving force for economic growth and digital innovation in Mississippi. With a vision to weave generative AI technologies into the fabric of Mississippi's business and nonprofit sectors, the AI Agency will simultaneously offer workforce development opportunities for current students and recent graduates. A pilot for the AI Agency, led by the founding partners of the Mississippi AI Collaborative and Jackson State University students, launches in January 2024. Strategic plans for expansion, led by the AI Agency Chief Technology Officer, will see this model translated and implemented state-wide. The AI Agency will seek to address known challenges of AI implementation by offering sustained technical advisory for business leaders, advice on risk management, resources on ethics and sustainability, and ongoing upskilling opportunities for leaders, employees, and students.

Role of the Chief Technology Officer (CTO)
